What does Divorce mediation look like?

What does divorce mediation look like? Most people have seen lawyers or therapists on TV, so they have an image in their mind of how these professionals work, but many clients do not know what to expect when they begin divorce mediation.

At Westfield Mediation, LLC, we meet with both spouses together to help guide them to an agreement on parenting and financial issues.  Our focus is on creating a plan for their future, and we begin by explaining the divorce process, and by learning what the divorcing couple has in mind. We ask questions, and answer questions.  We also assign homework – the gathering of relevant documents, reviewing of proposals, consulting with experts.  We use our experience working with other families and our knowledge of the divorce process to help bring each divorcing couple to resolution.

Divorce mediation is different from therapy and different from a business meeting. Many of the topics we discuss are emotional, and the parties may have difficulty listening to each other.  We expect that.  And as divorce mediators, we make sure both spouses have a chance to voice their concerns without blame or name-calling.  We try to draw from the participants what would work best going forward, instead of focusing on the arguments of the past.  Our job is to listen, to explain, and to guide the couple to a fair and workable future plan for their family.
