Is mediation right for me?

Many people call us at Westfield Mediation, LLC, wondering whether mediation is right for them.  They may have heard about mediation from a relative, friend or co-worker. Maybe they found out that mediation is less expensive than litigation. Still, they wonder whether it will work for them. As mediators, we know that going through a divorce is a difficult and emotional process, and we have worked with clients of all backgrounds and personalities.

Mediation is cheaper than going to court, and can be less stressful and combative. So, generally, good candidates for mediation are couples who want to save money, and who want a better process for themselves and their children.  But isn’t that almost everyone?

What else do you need?  It helps if you are compromise-minded, and prepared to think about the future, rather than focus on rehashing past arguments; if you can look at the big picture rather than get stuck on small details. Mostly, to make mediation successful, you need to be able to communicate with your spouse in a reasonable manner, and have some ability to work together.    Mediation may not be the right choice for everyone.  But if you can make it work, the process can be a much better alternative to litigation.
