At Westfield Mediation, LLC, we have been helping clients through their divorces as divorce mediators for more than thirteen years. Over this time, we have gotten lots of questions from prospective clients. Some of the most common questions and their answers are below:
Q: How long does mediation take and how much does it cost?
A: Generally, divorce mediation takes 4-6 one-hour sessions. Clients choose the pace, but for most people, coming in every 2-3 weeks, the process takes 2-3 months. Many clients file for divorce after they complete mediation, and the Court schedules their hearing (which may be virtual) for 2-3 months after that. Our fee at Westfield Mediation is $300/hour for the time we spend meeting and the time we spend drafting your agreement. We estimate a 10-15 hour divorce mediation process from start to finish, though it can be longer or shorter depending on how complicated the situation.
Q: What if I want to get divorced, but my spouse won’t participate in mediation?
A: For divorce mediation to work, both partners must attend and be open to working together. We do offer a one-time one-person consult for clients who are in the information gathering stage. Sometimes, if the person who wants to move forward files for divorce it shows the reluctant spouse that this is really happening, and that convinces them to attend mediation to save time and money.
Q: What if I don’t know what I want?
A: A lot of people find the idea of divorce overwhelming and aren’t sure if it’s the path they want to take -- now or ever. We encourage couples to come in to learn more about the divorce process and divorce mediation. There is no commitment to sign up, and finding out more about this manageable, affordable process will likely reduce your stress about next steps.
Q: How do I choose a divorce mediator that is right for us?
A: For best results, it is good to have a mediator that is the right fit for you. Most people call around to multiple mediators to get a sense of personality, approach and price. Location may also be important, but since meetings can be conducted virtually, finding a mediator close to home or work may be less of a factor. Many of our clients choose us after seeking recommendations from friends, therapists, lawyers or online reviews.
