summer parenting plans

Summer has begun.  As a co-parent you are either really excited about this or dreading this.  It really depends on the comprehensiveness of the parenting plan you developed.  Some co-parents know when they have the kids for summer vacation, who is now with them during the day when they were normally in school, what camps they are going to on which weeks and what is happening for 4th of July and Labor Day weekend.

Some co-parents are panicked right about now. An undetailed parenting plan covers the basics, and counts on school hours to fill in the gap when both parents are working.  Well you don’t have that in summertime unless you have worked out who has what vacation weeks, what camp/child care you have arranged for working hours and summer holidays.  At Westfield Mediation, LLC, we help parents develop a comprehensive parenting plan that covers the entire year.

Some parents opt to keep the same parenting plan for the entire calendar year.  Some co-parents take the summer to spend more time with their children than s/he is able to during the school year.  So the day to day and vacation/holiday parenting plan is quite different in the summer.  It is important to consider what works best for your and the kid’s summer schedule when developing a parenting plan.  It is also nice that you will know when you will not have your children with you and you can make those plans for a girls/guys weekend with your old high school or college friends.

No matter what time of year you develop the parenting plan, summer schedules need to have their own consideration.

Getting co-parenting help online

As divorce mediators, we often find that divorcing parents have trouble communicating with each other.  Parenting conversations and decision-making can lead to arguments or stress which in turn take an emotional toll on both the parents and the children.

Some online programs have been developed to help address this problem and to promote effective co-parenting.  Some of these can be used to help create family calendars, while others provide advice, or help track family expenses and communications.

At Westfield Mediation, LLC, we explain to our clients that parenting is a lifelong commitment. So, it is best for you and your kids to have tools to make it work effectively.  Moreover, children’s needs change over time, and flexibility is key.

To this end, we have recommended to some clients that they use Our Family Wizard.  Through their website,  ourfamilywizard.com and apps, parents can create joint family calendars that include parenting time, and family events. In addition, they offer ways to track the expenses for the children. Other potentially useful sites include uptoparents.org which provides co-parenting advice and resources, and talkingparents.com which allows divorcing parents to keep track of their communications.  When divorcing parents find ways to communicate effectively – and without bickering, they improve their family dynamic and the well-being of their children.
