Sometimes couples are thinking about getting divorced but they are not sure that they are really ready to move forward. Divorce is a big step, and often seems overwhelming.
At Westfield Mediation, LLC, we always encourage potential clients to come in and learn more about the process. Going to an introductory meeting about divorce mediation does not require any commitment on your part. There is truth to the saying “knowledge is power;” and our clients find value in learning more about divorce and mediation, even if they are not sure they want to go down this path right now or ever.
In our divorce mediation practice, we offer two kinds of introductory meetings. One is for both partners to come in to learn about the divorce process in New Jersey, and about how divorce mediation works. We provide a forum for people to ask questions about their particular situation. If the clients decide at the meeting or later on that they want to move forward, we plan together for future meetings on parenting, the division of assets and debts, and financial support (child support and spousal support). If couples are not ready to move ahead, they can always go home and think about it some more. There is no pressure to decide.
Sometimes, one spouse wants to move ahead but the other is not at the same point, and the reluctant partner will not agree to come to a meeting. For those clients, we offer a one-time half hour consultation for the interested spouse where we explain the divorce and mediation processes and answer questions. The goal of these meetings is to educate the interested party so that they can bring back the information to the one who stayed home and educate them as well. If the couple later decides to move ahead with mediation, we make sure that both parties have a good understanding of the process before going on to the next steps.
In addition, to keep divorcing couples in control of their own process, divorce mediation at Westfield Mediation, LLC is always pay as you go – no retainer required. Clients can take a break at any time in the process and just pay for the time used. With this approach, we meet clients where they are and do not pressure anyone to move more quickly than they are ready.
By educating our clients about divorce and mediation and allowing them to control the pace, we work to make the mediation process as low stress as possible.
